Five things to consider when choosing your roof window

The right amount of daylight

A replacement project is the perfect time to upgrade your roof window to a larger size or even multiple roof windows. Larger roof windows provide more daylight and better views, while multiple roof windows can provide a dynamic focal point with panoramic views. To secure the right amount of daylight in a room we apply the “Lumiscore.” The Lumiscore can simply be calculated by dividing the surface (m2) of your room with 6. The result will provide you with the exact size of floorspace, which the glazing of your roof window should cover. In this way, you can easily secure the recommended amount of daylight in your room

“E.g. if your room is 12m2 then at least 2.5m2 of your floorspace should be covered by your roof window’s glazing to ensure the right amount of daylight in your room.”

Roof window operation

Your replacement roof window can be configured in three different ways:

  • Centre-pivot - Easier to open in higher installations, which is convenient if you e.g. have furniture placed below your roof window.
  • Top-hung - Opens outwards for an unobstructed view and feeling of extra space.
  • VELUX INTEGRA® - Operates the roof window remotely using a remote control or automatically using VELUX ACTIVE with NETAMO indoor climate control app on your smartphone. This is ideal for roof windows that are out of reach in your home.

Roof window glazing

Glazing is the easiest way to boost the energy efficiency of your roof window. Select the glazing that fits your need:

  • Double glazing (standard) - Comes with a rain noise reduction coating, tempered glass, and safety lamination.

  • Triple glazing – Upgrade to triple glazing for increased energy efficiency in your home.

  • Noise reduction glazing – Upgrade if you would like to block out unwanted noise from your room.

Internal finish

We offer three different types of internal finish for our roof windows:

  • White painted (standard) - Reflects more light back into a room than a traditional wood surface. Perfect for living rooms and bedrooms.

  • White polyurethane - Upgrade to white polyurethane for a more durable coating that is moisture-resistant and easy to wipe clean. Ideal for humid rooms, such as kitchens or bathrooms.

  • Pine - Clear lacquer pine with a triple coat finish that has the same great quality as our standard, but without the white painted finish. Provides a natural finish, which fits perfect into traditional interiors.

Blinds and shutters

Last but not least, our blinds and shutters. These VELUX accessories add a new dimension of customisation and not at least comfort to your roof window and can easily be installed by you or by the installer.

  • Blackout blinds - Provide maximum blackout effect for a good night’s sleep in your bedroom or a daytime nap in your living room.
  • Awning blinds - Block the sun’s rays from hitting your roof window to keep your home cool on sunny days.
  • Roller shutters - Provide protection from outside elements for complete peace of mind in your home.
